Friction and inaction

11th of May 2022

For the past (checks last post date) six or so months, I've posted nothing here. In that time I've been busier than ever. I've worked on a broader range of projects, taken more notes, and scribbled down more ideas than in any similar period in memory. I've got stacks of Field Notes, and virtual stacks of text files just waiting to turn into something. So what gives?

My sense is that, in great part, it is down to friction, and that the way I've set this site up is also, in great part, to blame. When I first set this up I used simple html files and it was painfully cumbersome. From there, I switched to Jekyll and then to Eleventy and each step improved things a little. Still, there's just that bit too much friction. I can't just jot something down the same way I do in a dogeared notebook. There's a process. There's things to run, stuff to check, self-inflicted errors to wrestle with every so often. It all means that I think twice before posting here.

I'm not yet quite sure what the solution is. I'm still working on it. But, whatever it is, I want to reduce the friction so that this space can be just that little bit closer to the experience of scribbling in a notebook.
